Imago Night

This is the second Write Campaign Challenge.  The rules are as follows:

Write a blog post in 200 words or less, excluding the title. It can be in any format, whether flash fiction, non-fiction, humorous blog musings, poem, etc. The blog post should:
  • include the word "imago" in the title
  • include the following 4 random words: "miasma," "lacuna," "oscitate," "synchronicity,"
If you want to give yourself an added challenge (optional and included in the word count), make reference to a mirror in your post.
For those who want an even greater challenge (optional), make your post 200 words EXACTLY!
Of course, I had to go for the added challenge.

Kethae twisted her arm behind her back, seeking out the lacuna between her shoulder blades with gentle fingers. A gasp escaped her lips as her probing digits brushed the swollen, tender skin. The cavity had closed and it throbbed, like an abscess beneath the surface.

Is it always this bad?” she asked.

Father Wind swirled around her, murmuring comfort as he blew soothing cold air off the lake across her back.

Don't be a baby.” Sister Rain wept. “It gets worse.” Even so, she dropped cool, fat tears onto Kethae's heated skin.

A miasma of agony enveloped Kethae's torso and she fell to her knees with a long, plaintive wail as the skin of her back oscitated from top to bottom. Something wet slithered out of the split.

Mother Moon smiled down at her from the black velvet sky.

Come, my child,” she whispered. “Come to me.”

I can't.”

Yes you can, love,” Mother Moon said. “Look.”

Father Wind's cool breath fanned across her back to the sound of rustling silk. Kethae rose, shrugging off her old skin, and marveled at the synchronicity of her new gossamer wings, mirrored in the lake.

Wow. That was excellent and so quickly done! Fabulous. What a great idea, damn, wish I'd thought of that. I am definitely voting ... gosh, I haven't even found out what all the bloody words mean yet!

By the way, your link didn't work from Rachael's site.

Well-done! Story was fun to read.

I had to read it a second time, so that I could fully understand what had been happening. When I knew what the result would be, the journey to it was so well described, so evocative of the pain that Kethae had to endure to get her wings -- well done!

Well done. The challenge words are, um, challenging this time, but you drew a great picture of imago.

Hello from a new follower, working backwards up the list. I had pictures of Signorney Weaver and Alien running through my head and was so relieved it turned out to have a happy ending. Excellent job! Mine may be opposite, number 52.

This is really beautiful. Love your usage of lacuna. In 200 words you managed to transform the mundane into a small dose of escapism. Loved this one!

Cheryl,

This was *awesome.* Why did it kick so much ass? Because it really FIT. I was wondering what the "slitering" down the back was (which was fantastic sensory imagery), and then when you mentioned the wings, it brought the whole "imago" image together into a tight, happy, perfect ball. Being a fantasy-lover who always happens to write normal, mundane bullshit for flash fiction pieces, I envy your ability to transport me to another world is less than 200 words!
